What is Samsung Magician?
It is Samsung's free utility for Samsung internal SSDs, portable SSDs, memory cards, and USB flash drives. Owners use it to read drive details, update firmware, and run the performance and security tools the model allows. It is written for Samsung products. Other brands, and Samsung OEM drives preinstalled in a PC, do not get the full set.
Which operating systems run Samsung Magician 9.0?
Samsung's FAQ names Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit), macOS Catalina 10.15 and later, and Android 7.0 and later. The install guide says Windows 10 or higher, which covers Windows 11. Windows 8.1 and older should use Magician 7.3. Linux is not supported. Internal SSDs are not supported on macOS or Android.
Does it work with another brand of SSD?
No for the full toolset. Samsung says firmware update, drive health, secure erase, and total bytes written are not supported on non-Samsung SSDs. Supported features may still vary on Samsung OEM SSDs. The program also refuses SCSI-attached SSDs.
Which languages does it include?
The install guide lists English, Korean, Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), French, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian. Samsung's FAQ lists the same ten languages and says Chinese without adding Simplified. Menus can differ by language edition.
Is Samsung Magician free?
Yes. Samsung gives it to owners of Samsung memory products at no charge. The license is proprietary. Uptodown's record for Windows build 9.0.1.950 is also marked free.
Does it need internet?
No. It runs offline. Internet is required to authenticate a drive as Samsung and is how you receive firmware, feature modules, and application updates. A proxy can block the firmware update. If you delete program files while offline, certification and configuration can break.
Why will it not install, or why does it ask to reinstall every boot?
Samsung's sequence is uninstall, delete the old program folder, delete the Samsung Magician registry key, and install again. A 2022 Uptodown comment from carg0 describes that reinstall prompt on Windows 10 after version 7.1. The numbered steps are in the reinstall guide.
Does Windows 11 work?
The install guide's rule is Windows 10 or higher. A 2023 Uptodown comment from fatorangeduck45938 says only "Win 11, it doesn't work," with no build number. That report is older than Uptodown's 9.0.1.950 listing from 1 April 2026. If the current build still fails to open, use Samsung's reinstall sequence and the 1920 by 1080 display note.
Can I clone my old disk?
Yes, onto a Samsung SSD, with Data Migration. Samsung describes the copy as the operating system, applications, and user data from the current HDD or SSD. Software RAID is not officially supported. Letterless volumes are invisible to Magician.
Does it support RAID?
No. Samsung does not officially support a software RAID environment, and BIOS RAID on SATA is in the unsupported list. SCSI controllers are also unsupported.
Why is the window cut off?
Samsung optimizes Magician for 1920 by 1080. If the layout is wrong, change the display ratio from Settings, Display. High DPI scaling on the installer can also clip text. Samsung's fix is the installer's Compatibility, Change high DPI settings, Override high DPI scaling.
How do I update SSD firmware, and do I need a backup?
Drive Details shows the firmware. An "Updated version is available" notice, or the Update button, means Samsung has a newer one. Reboot afterward. Samsung says the update does not normally erase data, and still tells you to back up first. The PC powers off after a 20 second countdown. Do not sleep or unplug the drive during the write.
Magician does not detect my SSD. What now?
Refresh or reboot, confirm Windows sees the disk, and check that SATA is IDE or AHCI. Old AMD chipsets can be unsupported. RAID, SCSI, and some enclosures hide the drive. The detection guide lists Samsung's order of checks.
Why did authentication fail?
Samsung says to check the internet connection and restart the PC. Authentication is an online check that the drive is a Samsung product. If it still fails, contact an authorized Samsung service center. Specific IRST drivers (12.6.0.1033 and 12.8.10.1005) can also break authentication. Samsung suggests rolling those drivers back.
Why is capacity smaller than the label?
Samsung cites the IDEMA standard and says about 93 percent of the physical capacity is the usable figure they advertise. The label treats 1 GB as 1,000 MB. Windows treats 1 GB as 1,024 MB. The two formulas are why the numbers disagree. The notation can also change by operating system.
Why is Drive Health N/A?
Drive health and total usage exist for Samsung branded products, and only for S.M.A.R.T. attributes that drive exposes. Unsupported attributes display as N/A.
Can an end-of-life SSD still get firmware?
Samsung says Magician can still apply the latest firmware an end-of-life SSD already has, and can still use supported features. There will be no new firmware beyond that last release.
Where is the Windows download?
Samsung publishes it on the Consumer Storage tools page. This website links there and does not host the installer. Uptodown lists build 9.0.1.950, dated 1 April 2026, at 195.13 MB. Check the live tools page for a newer build such as the 9.0.2 report from September 2026.
